Nigel Hyland has been an active force in the Tasmanian Football League Umpires Association (TFLUA) for nearly three decades. Hyland’s success as a boundary umpire reached its peak in the halcyon years of the statewide league when he officiated in more than 200 senior games and three grand finals.
Hyland continues as a running umpire and has turned his energy to administration of the largest umpire association in Tasmania. As president of the TFLUA he has seen the umpire fraternity continue to grow through a time of considerable transition as the statewide league has disbanded. Highlights of Hyland’s career include the recruitment of large numbers of new umpires and the celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the TFLUA.
