David McQuestin was an accomplished junior footballer who played in the northern U19 premiership for City South in 1961. However, with the advent of television in 1962, he retired from playing and embarked on a career in broadcasting.
The inaugural epidsode of Sports Club was broadcast on television in March 1964 with football stars Darrel Baldock, Jim Ross, Geoff Long and Arthur Hodgson. As the front man for the program McQuestin interviewed on a weekly basis high profile football identities including luminaries such as Ron Barassi, Tom Hafey, Alan Jeans, Norm Smith, Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes, Hassa Mann, Bob Davis and Polly Farmer.
Additionally, McQuestin commentated many famous football games during the 1960s in Tasmania, none more so than the infamous state final between Wynyard and North Hobart in 1967. The following day’s episode of Sports Club featured Wynyard coach John Coughlan and Umpire Pilgrim.
In the 1970s McQuestin rejected an offer to work with Ron Casey on the Victorian World of Sport program to move into management within the Tasmanian broadcasting sector.
McQuestin was a pioneer in television football broadcasting and left an indelible mark on the game in Tasmania.
